Airfare Travel Akita Checklist

Flying with your akita requires a little more planning than traveling solo or with a human travel partner. To simplify what you need to do, use the following helpful akita travel check list.

The largest breed of dog that is recognized by the American Kennel Club is the Irish Wolfhound, which stands thirty to 30 to 35 inches at the top of the shoulders and weighs 105 to 125 pounds.

1. If you plan to travel with your akita, book a direct flight. Not to mention, it will reduce the possibility of your akita being mishandled by baggage staff or being left behind. During your booking reservation inquire about the airline's restrictions on transporting animals.

While many people think of Boxers as aggressive, they are actually great with children. They were bred to be hunters, yes, but they were bred to corner prey, not kill it. As a result, they are protective, yet patient.

2. Set up an appointment with your akita's veterinarian for a check-up, Update your canine's vaccinations if they are not current. While at the veterinarian, coordinate the details of obtaining a health certificate from the veterinarian. The health certificate must be dated within 10 days of your departure.

The bedlington terrier, a large, unique looking breed, is often described as looking like a lamb on a leash. This is probably because it has fur with a wooly texture. As a result of this fur type, the bedlington does not shed.

3. Buy a USDA-approved shipping crate adequately sized to be conducive for your akita's travel (stand, sit and turn) around in comfortably. (You can get a great one cheap at http://www.scrooby.com )

Male Irish wolfhounds are usually at least 32 to 34 inches tall and females are usually around 30 inches tall. This makes the Irish wolfhound the tallest breed. Although a few other dogs, such as the great dane, come close to equalling that height.

4. Prior to the day you leave, remember to freeze a small tray or dish of water for your akita. This will prevent the water from spilling during boarding/loading. Affix a diminutive packet/pouch of dried food outside your akita's crate.

Newfoundlands have webbed feet, just like ducks. They also have extremely water-proof fur. Those features, as well as their great strength, loyalty and willingness to learn, make newfies great candidates to work as water rescue dogs.

5. For identification purposes, tape an updated photograph of your akita onto the top of the crate. In case your pet breaks out of the carrier, the photo can be a lifesaver. (Do not forget to place a photo of your akita in your wallet.

The Skye Terrier's origins are connected with a centuries old shipwreck. Early in the 1600's a Spanish ship wrecked on the Island of Skye in the Scottish Hebrides. Some of the survivors of the shipwreck were Maltese dogs that mated with the local terriers, creating a new and unique breed.

6. Before you leave for the airport, remember to place a collar as well as an identification tag on your akita. In the event of a canine escape, the collar should include destination information in it.

The tibetan terrier is not a true terrier and is probably more closely related to the lhasa apso. However, the tibetan terrier is indeed from Tibet, where monks once treasured this intelligent breed of dogs as guardians of their temples.
