Do Akitas Like to Wear Clothes?
Most people who dress up their akitas do so for one of two reasons. The first reason is because the people find it funny. Let's face it, a akita wearing clothes is cute. It's a great topic for conversation. It's fun at holidays and parties. However, it's not necessarily as enjoyable for the akita. Akitas are individuals, just like human beings. Some akitas may tolerate dressing up better than other akitas do, especially if there is food or some reward involved, but that does not necessarily mean that they like it.

The Schipperke, or "little captain", is generally thought of as being solid black in the USA. However, they do actually come in other colors. The reason they are commonly thought to only be black, is that the black variety is the only type currently recognized by the AKC.
The second reason people dress up their pets is for protection from the cold. This reason is completely valid for certain breeds. For instance, breeds such as the chihuahua originated in warmer climates. Therefore, if you own a DOG that is native to a warmer climate and you live in a colder climate they have trouble keeping warm in such weather. In these cases sometimes a DOG sweater is essential.

Chow chows were originally bred as food, just like cows. However, in some cases, they were also used as hunters and helpers. They were also used to keep people warm under cold conditions by cuddling up to people with their soft, warm fur.
It is very important, no matter what the reason for dressing up the akita, to supervise the akita if it is dressed up. Akitas shouldn't be dressed up in anything that they could easily get tangled in or chew up and choke on. If the akita does not take well to being dressed up it could easily start running around trying to escape and get caught on doors or other objects.

The official name of the dogs we call pitbulls is the American staffordshire terrier. Pitbulls have been the preferred pet of many famous people including Fred Astaire, Vin Diesel, Alicia Silverstone, Michael J. Fox, and James Caan.
The bottom line is that if the akita needs clothes to go outside in the cold or seems to tolerate them ok at holidays or special occasions then there's no harm done. However, if the akita doesn't need clothes and doesn't seem to like them then they shouldn't be forced into it. Akitas, like people, don't usually like to be forced to do something for someone else's amusement.

The greater swiss mountain dog, or swissy, is believed to be a direct descendant of the ancient tibetan mastiff. A versatile dog, the swissy traditionally drove cattle, guarded property, protected human companions and fought in wars.

The Broholmer is a breed that is recognized only in Denmark. It was thought extinct in the 1960's but, in December of 1974, a purebred Broholmer popped up in Finland. This dog was a male, and the owners hoped to find a female for him to mate with, but it never happened. While still recognized as a breed, an example has yet to appear again.

The bedlington terrier, a large, unique looking breed, is often described as looking like a lamb on a leash. This is probably because it has fur with a wooly texture. As a result of this fur type, the bedlington does not shed.

Part of the reason that basset hounds have such a unique look is that the British purposely bred basset hounds to have short legs, so that hunters could keep up with them. Unfortunate this has caused the breed to be prone to leg/joint problems.
