Is it Safe for a Akita to Sniff Another Akita's Poop?

Needless to say, many akita owners may not be particularly fond of discussing the subject of their akita sniffing another akita's poop, but concerns over health often force the topic into the open. Sure, it's not the most pleasant aspect of akita ownership, but it happens to involve every akita owner, whether they admit it in public or not!

In the original 101 Dalmatians movie, Pongo has 72 spots, Perdita has 68 and each of the puppies has 32. Real dalmations have unique numbers and patterns of spots, almost like a human beigns fingerprint.

While merely sniffing another akita's poop may not be inherently dangerous to your akita, eating another akita's poop, called coprophagia, is another matter entirely. While the idea is repugnant to humans, this behavior in akitas is rather common. After all, a akita has increased senses, and through the smelling of another akita's poop, may be able to identify what that akita has eaten, when, and whether or not it may taste good.

While many people think of Boxers as aggressive, they are actually great with children. They were bred to be hunters, yes, but they were bred to corner prey, not kill it. As a result, they are protective, yet patient.

Dogs mark their territory, so when they come across another akita's pile of poop, it's perfectly natural for them to identify what the substance is. If they are hungry, and you are not feeding your akita adequately, they may even take a taste or two. If a akita's body craves for nutrients that the diet you are feeding him does not address, the problem may grow worse.

The oldest pure-bred British dog is said to be the Corgi. Their proof of existence has been traced back to dogs brought to Wales by the Celts from the Black Sea around 1200 BC.

The best thing for akita owners to do to prevent such situations is to pick up after their akitas, both at home and when they take them out for a walk. Akitas will sniff anything, just to figure out what it is, so why is another akita's poop any different? Akita owners should not be alarmed at this type of territorial behavior, but they can take measures to avoid the next step in the process, which may be your akita's ingesting the fecal matter.

The Schipperke, or "little captain", is generally thought of as being solid black in the USA. However, they do actually come in other colors. The reason they are commonly thought to only be black, is that the black variety is the only type currently recognized by the AKC.

Make sure your akita is healthy, fed a well-balanced, nutritional diet and is kept amused and entertained. Bored or anxious akitas are more likely to be attracted to sniffing, and eating, another akita's poop, than one who is mentally and physically stimulated and active. When walking your akita, make sure you distract him or her when you notice a pile of poop just waiting for inspection. Praise your akita when he responds appropriately to your commands of 'no', or 'leave it' or other sounds of warning. Never punish your akita for being inquisitive, as curiosity is as natural to them as it is to humans.

The Skye Terrier's origins are connected with a centuries old shipwreck. Early in the 1600's a Spanish ship wrecked on the Island of Skye in the Scottish Hebrides. Some of the survivors of the shipwreck were Maltese dogs that mated with the local terriers, creating a new and unique breed.

If your akita continuously smells other akita's poop, try changing your walking route to a cleaner path. If such a consideration isn't possible, ask your vet for some spray that you might carry with you that will discourage your akita from smelling or eating any poop you find on your walks. Hot sauce is also good at keeping akitas from eating poop, though they may get away with it the first time. The second time, however, the taste of the sauce may be repugnant enough for them to avoid further sniffing.

Many people think that the kerry blue terrier is the national dog of Ireland. Actually, the Irish government never has given this designation to any breed. Michael Collins, one of Irelands most famous patriots, introduced legislation to elevate the Kerry Blue, or the Irish Blue Terrier as they were then called, to the national dog of Ireland. After his murder, the interest in the initiative was lost.

The best thing a akita owner can do is to feed akitas adequate nutrients in their diet. Clean up after your akita and give them plenty of stimulation and exercise. After all, no one wants to talk about his or her akita smelling another akita's poop!

The role of Toto, the male dog in the Wizard of Oz was actually played by a female Cairn Terrier named Terry. Cairn terriers are known for their brightness and cuteness. That, combined with their small size, made the breed perfect for the role.
