Popular Akita Treats

People aren't the only ones who enjoy surprises and treats once in a while. Pets love treats too, especially akitas. Finding popular DOG treats is easy when you shop for them at local pet supply stores, and the varieties are endless when it comes to finding both edible and non-edible treats for your best friend.

The Schipperke, or "little captain", is generally thought of as being solid black in the USA. However, they do actually come in other colors. The reason they are commonly thought to only be black, is that the black variety is the only type currently recognized by the AKC.

One of the most popular akita treats offered in pet stores across the nation are the rawhide chews that come available in a variety of shapes, including bones, moccasins, balls and just about anything else you can think of. Akitas love these chews, and some are B-B-Q-flavored, while others are enhanced with meat flavors. Akitas will spend hours chewing on these treats. Another extremely popular treat for akitas are the pigs' ears that are sold by the thousands every day across the country. They're cheap and akitas can chew of them for days. Chewing is good exercise for your akita's jaws and keeps their teeth healthy and strong.

The Broholmer is a breed that is recognized only in Denmark. It was thought extinct in the 1960's but, in December of 1974, a purebred Broholmer popped up in Finland. This dog was a male, and the owners hoped to find a female for him to mate with, but it never happened. While still recognized as a breed, an example has yet to appear again.

While most rawhide DOG chews have no nutritional value, they provide something different for your akita to occupy his or her time with, and aside of the benefits of the chewing exercise, your akitas tail will wag for hours when occupied gnawing and nibbling on their rawhide chews. Akitas also like to chew on ropes, or better yet, a real joint bone from your local butcher's shop. If you buy a joint bone for your akita, make sure you find one that will suit the size of your akita. Many people purchase a knee or shoulder joint bone, and then boil it and dry it before offering it to their akitas, as it will last forever and won't break or be accidentally swallowed.

Most adult Borzoi (russian wolfhounds) are almost mute. They bark only very rarely. They are gentle, sensitive dogs with gracious house-manners and a natural respect for humans. Their quiet nature makes them an ideal pet for families with children.

Making and creating your own popular akita treats are another option, and packages and recipes abound for creating wholesome, nutritious akita treats in your own kitchen, using ingredients such as liver, giblets, whole grain rice and vegetables. Such recipe ingredients are then shaped into fire hydrants, cats, balls and bones for your akitas enjoyment. One very simple treat is to bake beef liver in your oven until it's crisp. (You may not like the smell, but it will drive your akita crazy with anticipation)!

The Japanese Chin, also known as the Japanese Spaniel, is considered to be one of the most cat-like of the dog breeds when it comes to attitude. It is alert, intelligent, and often independent. Also, like a cat, it uses its paws to wash its face.

Still, the most popular akita treats continue to be the rawhide chews. Just insure that your akita isn't taking huge bites of it, which can swell to four times their size when they become wet, as in the akita's stomach. Of course, traditional DOG biscuit bones are still a great favorite among most DOG breeds, so you should always have some of those on hand as well. Don't forget, akitas like treats too, so ensure that you have a variety of them to offer on a regular basis.

Rhodesian ridgebacks have an actual ridge along the top of their backs. The ridge is made up of forward-growing hairs. This ridge gives the rhodesian ridgeback a unique and easily recognizable look.

When it comes to collies there is some debate about the smooth-coat collie. Some breed organizations consider the smooth-coat and rough-coat dogs to be variations of the same breed. Others consider them to be completely seperate.
