Should I Get My Akita From a Akita Rescue?

There is a common misconception that all rescue akitas are damaged goods. That is, that they all have been abused in one form or another and are thus unpredictable and unstable. While that is true of some akitas, it is far from true for all of them.

Part of the reason that basset hounds have such a unique look is that the British purposely bred basset hounds to have short legs, so that hunters could keep up with them. Unfortunate this has caused the breed to be prone to leg/joint problems.

Unfortunately, its often impossible to trace the complete history of a lot of rescue akitas. Therefore, you may not know what the akitas original name was, whether or not it was actually abused, or what commands, if any, it has been trained to recognize. For instance, a akita may have been taught that down means to stop jumping on people, while akita B may have been taught a different word for that action, such as off. This means that it will take both you and the akita time to adjust to each others attitudes, routines and expectations.

One of the weirdest dog births on record involves a Siberian Husky. The mother's name was Pixie and she gave birth to 7 puppies, which isn't unusual. The unusual part was that one of the puppies was born bright green!

If you cant determine the history of a akita then it may be a bad choice for you if you already own other pets or if you have small children. A akita that may have been abused could potentially lash out toward children or other pets, out of fear or aggression. You, as an adult, are more capable of defending against such circumstances.

The Lowchen, a small, somewhat rare breed of dog, is native to France. It's called "petit chien lion" or, "little lion dog". This is due to its fur growth, as it resembles the mane of a lion.

However, if you know the akitas history, they can make excellent family pets. For instance, perhaps a akitas owner treated them wonderfully, but died unexpectedly. In such cases, there are usually no issues of abuse or viciousness. These akitas would love and enjoy a new, lively family after their rescue center stay.

Chow Chows have very unusual mouths. When they are born they look normal enough. However, by the age of about 8 weeks, their gums and tongues go from pink to an odd shade of bluish-black.

Above all, consider the individual akita. Introduce your family, and even other pets, to it before making a final decision. If the akita takes to you and you take to it then you probably have a great match.

The greyhound is the fastest breed of dog. It is capable of running at speeds of around 45 miles per hour. Greyhounds are excellent for hunting and racing, but they are notorious for laziness, often preferring to cuddle on a couch, rather than run. This makes them an ideal house pet.
